Aim and Objectives Click here

This online learning module has clear and concise aims, objectives and anticipated outcomes, listed below. These will appear on the Dentaljuce CPD Certificate, along with the time spent, dates, and detailed topics you studied within the module. Certificates can be printed at any time, covering any range of dates. Dentaljuce CPD complies with the UK GDC's requirements for verifiable continuing professional development.

Your Professional Development Plan (PDP)

Regulatory authorities recommend that CPD/CE is undertaken based on learning needs that you have identified and entered into your PDP. Some authorities may not accept your CPD as verifiable unless it has been identified in the PDP before you undertake it.

Before starting this module, check that the learning outcomes are what you require, and that you have entered the need into your PDP. Here is an example PDP entry for this module.

To refresh my knowledge of Radiography and Radiological Protection, and meet the IR(ME)R theoretical knowledge requirement. Take the Dentaljuce Radiography and Radiological Protection module.   • have an understanding of the physical principles involved in x-ray generation
• have an understanding of the biological effects and dangers of x-ray radiation
• know the relevant rules and regulations that apply to radiography in dental practice
• understand the importance of Justification, Optimisation, and Quality Control Programmes in ensuring radiation safety.
• meet the IR(ME)R theoretical knowledge requirements

Aim
The aim of the learning and teaching materials in this Dentaljuce module is to allow learners to develop their professional knowledge, understanding and competence in Radiography and Radiological Protection, in line with their identified personal learning requirements.

Module objectives
The objectives of the Radiography and Radiological Protection module are to provide the learner with the core of knowledge and the understanding necessary to use X-ray equipment and process radiographs competently and safely in the dental practice, in line with the theoretical knowledge requirements of the IRR and IR(ME)R acts and current professional recommendations.
This knowledge and understanding will allow the learner to gain the most benefit from hands-on radiographical training in their place of work.

Anticipated learning outcomes
The learner will:
• have an understanding of the physical principles involved in x-ray generation
• have an understanding of the biological effects and dangers of x-ray radiation
• know the relevant rules and regulations that apply to radiography in dental practice
• understand the importance of Justification, Optimisation, and Quality Control Programmes in ensuring radiation safety.
• meet the IR(ME)R theoretical knowledge requirements
• through achieving these outcomes, provide an improved level of service to their patients.

GDC Principles
This CPD will support the learner in meeting the following GDC principles and the underlying standards:
• Principle 2: Communicate effectively with patients
• Principle 3: Obtain valid consent
• Principle 4: Maintain and protect patients’ information
• Principle 6: Work with colleagues in a way that is in patients’ best interests
• Principle 7: Maintain, develop and work within your professional knowledge and skills
• Principle 8: Raise concerns if patients are at risk

Go Radiation Physics and Radiation Biology
This juce covers how x-rays are produced and measured, and the various ways they can cause damage to living tissues.

Go Legal
IRMER and IRR - The UK Rules and Regulations that apply to dental radiology are presented and discussed.

Go Justification
One of the key principles of radiation safety, this juce looks at how it applies to various radiographic views in different dental disciplines.

Go Optimisation
This is all about the equipment used for taking, processing, and displaying radiographs, and how to ensure it is set up to give the lowest dose for a diagnostically useful radiograph.

Go Quality Assurance
A Quality Assurance Programme is a key requirement to ensure that good quality radiographic images are produced reliably and safely. QA programmes have to be individualised for each dental practice. We discuss the essentials.

Go FAQ Miscellany
A number of questions and answers on some of the details in Dental Radiography not covered in earlier pages.
