It is a truism that patients must consent to treatment. However, consent is a complicated process, and this module will take you through it, highlighting the legal and ethical basis for consent to examination and treatment.

Aim
The aim of the learning and teaching materials in this Dentaljuce module is to allow learners to develop their professional knowledge, understanding and competence in the fields of ethics, law and consent, in line with their identified personal learning requirements. 

Module objectives
• To present an overview of the main ethical theories and principles as they apply to health-care professionals.
• To present an overview of the ethical and legal significance of consent. 

Anticipated learning outcomes
The learner will:
• be able to identify what is required for valid consent.
• understand the ethical basis of consent.
• recognise when consent may not be valid.
• understand the relationship between consent and negligence.
• understand the principles and theories of ethics, and their application to the clinical situation.
• through achieving these outcomes, provide an improved level of service to their patients.

GDC Principles
This CPD will support the learner in meeting the following GDC principles and the underlying standards:
• Principle 1: Put patients' interests first
• Principle 2: Communicate effectively with patients
• Principle 3: Obtain valid consent

GDC Development Outcomes
This CPD will support the learner in meeting the following GDC Development Outcomes:
• DO A. (Communication domain). ​​Effective communication with patients, the dental team, and others across dentistry.
